When we discover a need to recover lost data the first thing we must ask ourselves is what type of data or files have we lost? There are available many different types of data recovery tools. Usually these tools are designed each for a specific file category such as image files and digital photographs or documents and applications. Very often when we attempt to recover data our efforts will be unsuccessful if we do not use the proper software tool. While there are quality general purpose data recovery tools available they are not near as efficient as the targeted software.

When you place a file in the Windows recycle bin in a sense it is no longer located in its original location on your computer’s hard disk drive. The data in that file has been copied and moved into a temporary folder. In fact the file itself has been renamed with a hash like number.

Because of this when you use a basic data recovery tool to search for files deleted by emptying the Windows recycle bin and scroll down the list of recoverable files you will never find your original file name and consequently be able to rescue that file. The best file recovery tools can recover files emptied from the Windows recycle bin easily. The software programs have scripting built in to their code that recognize the folder structure used for the copied original files and gather all files deleted by emptying the Windows recycle bin into one new location.

Most of the data recovery software available on the market today differs greatly one program to the next. The most common gauge of this difference is strength or as used in the information technology world robustness. For example, almost every data recovery tool can scan through a computer hard drive and recognize recently deleted files. But a surprisingly high percentage of the same tools are unable to reattach the original file name to that file. This of course makes a program of little value.
